Shipping container buildings are becoming more and more popular in recent times. They are revolutionizing the food and beverage sector, in particular, by providing the perfect conditions for a compact, cozy, and comfortable dining space. They are easy on the budget too. It is no wonder so many food shops are opting for shipping container buildings in Dubai, instead of going the traditional, brick-and-mortar route. It seems like it is just a matter of time before global fast-food giants jump on to the shipping container bandwagon too.
Starbucks Shows The Way Ahead for Shipping Container Modifications!
Starbucks, the universally favourite coffee shop chain from Seattle, has shown the way how. They have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability by converting shipping containers into their signature coffee shops. They have opened 45 such outlets based out of converted shipping containers around the world.
The Starbucks at Hualien Bay Mall, Taipei, however, has taken the container building model to a whole new level altogether. It uses a structure made up of 29 refurbished shipping containers to create a fantastic and futuristic coffee shop.
The Mother Of All Container Conversions!
Designed by celebrated Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma, known for his air-purifying paper sculptures and concrete museums, this coffee shop is an architectural marvel.
This store is his first project with shipping containers, and he has clearly blown it out of the water with his radical design, said to be inspired by the uneven foliage that is characteristic of a coffee bush.
The all-white coffee shop, with a drive-through facility, is made up of cantilevered containers placed at right angles to each other creating a complex two-storey structure. Windows and skylights are cut into the shipping containers to bring in plenty of much-needed natural light into the steel structure. This building is Asia’s first container Starbucks outlet that is part of the coffee company’s “Greener Stores” initiative that was set up to explore more sustainable shops for the future.
